Float AI video: the Float Away effect

A float AI video makes the subject of a photo lift off and drift away. Float Away does it with a bunch of colorful balloons: upload one photo and the AI ties the balloons on and floats your subject up into the sky in a short vertical video.

A sharp photo where the subject fills most of the frame.

How the Float Away effect works

Prompt sent with your photo
Colorful balloons tie to the subject of the photo and it gently floats up into the sky, whimsical.

Default: Veo 3.1 Lite, 4 seconds, 9:16, 320 credits (80 credits per second).

The float AI video works best on subjects that could plausibly lift off: a pet, a toy, a small car, a person standing alone with sky above them. The model needs empty space at the top of the frame to move the subject into, so a photo cropped tight to the head gives it nowhere to go and the balloons end up pasted on. Shoot or crop with a third of the frame as open sky.

Floating is a camera move as much as a subject move, and Veo 3.1 Lite tends to tilt up to follow the subject. If you want the subject to leave the frame instead, add "static camera, the subject floats out of the top of the frame" in the details field. Pair it with Inflate It for the same idea with the subject itself as the balloon.

Not every floating video needs balloons. The levitation version, where a person rises off the floor and hangs in mid-air with hair and clothes drifting, is the same request without the props: open image to video with the same photo and describe it, for example "the person slowly rises off the ground and floats in mid-air, hair and clothes drifting as if there is no gravity, static camera". A floating object (a cup, a phone, a plant) works the same way and is easier, because there is no face to keep consistent.

The viral floating-object edits on TikTok and YouTube are usually made in CapCut: you film the object held up by hand, film the empty scene, and mask the hand out frame by frame. The AI version needs one photo and no masking, at the cost of control: you describe the motion and the model decides the exact path. If the float looks too fast, ask for "slowly" and "gently" in the details field; Veo 3.1 Lite renders 4 seconds by default, so a slow rise uses the whole clip.

Tips

  • Small subjects and pets float most convincingly.
  • Blue skies make a great ending.

Questions

1How do I make a Float Away video?
Upload a clear photo, keep or tweak the effect prompt and press Generate. The video is ready in about a minute or two, depending on the model.
2What photo works best?
A sharp photo where the subject fills most of the frame. For people, the face should be clearly visible.
3Can I use other people's photos?
Only with their permission. Do not upload photos of people who have not agreed to it.
4Can I make a person float without balloons?
Yes. Use image to video with the same photo and describe a levitation: the person slowly rises off the ground and floats in mid-air, hair and clothes drifting, static camera. Leave space above the head in the photo so there is room to rise.
5Is this the same as the CapCut floating effect?
It gives a similar result from less material. The CapCut method masks your hand out of two clips you filmed; the AI version animates one still photo, so there is nothing to film or mask, but you steer the motion with words rather than by hand.
