What each part of the prompt does
- Specific ugliness
- A reindeer, a pom-pom nose and tiny bells give the sweater three concrete details. "Ugly sweater" on its own often comes back as a tasteful Nordic knit.
- Your words, knitted
- The text sits in quotes and is described as knitted, so the letters follow the knit pattern. Short words in capitals print best.
- Party props
- The eggnog mug and the crooked paper hat give the hands and head a job and make the scene a party rather than a portrait.
- Flash snapshot
- "Direct on-camera flash, slightly overexposed" copies the look of real party photos, which is what makes the joke land.

If the result isn't right
- If the knitted text has spelling errors, shorten it to one or two words.
- When the sweater looks expensive, add "cheap acrylic knit, slightly too big, bobbles on the sleeves".
- If the people behind have melted faces, ask for "people behind fully out of focus, no detail on their faces".
- For a moodier party, swap the flash for "warm lamp light and fairy lights, no flash".
