What each part of the prompt does
- Single hard light
- "A single hard light from the left that leaves half the face in shadow" describes split lighting in plain words. Saying where the shadow falls is more reliable than naming a lighting style the model may read differently.
- Plain black crew-neck
- Swapping the outfit for a plain black top removes logos, prints and colour clashes that look odd in monochrome, and keeps attention on the face.
- Gaze and mood
- "Look slightly past the camera with a calm, serious expression" sets the editorial mood. A direct smile into the lens would pull the image back toward a passport photo.
- Tonal range
- "Deep blacks and clean highlights" with "fine grain" prevents the common flat grey result and adds the texture of a printed page. Head and shoulders in 4:5 is the usual crop for a portrait spread.
Variations to try
Same idea, one thing changed. These have no example image yet.
Light from the right Turn my uploaded photo into a black-and-white studio portrait while keeping the face exactly the same. Plain dark grey backdrop, a single hard light from the right that leaves half the face in shadow, sharp detail in the eyes and hair, deep blacks and clean highlights. They wear a plain black crew-neck top and look slightly past the camera with a calm, serious expression. Fine grain, high-end magazine portrait, 4:5 frame, head and shoulders.
Bright white backdrop Turn my uploaded photo into a black-and-white studio portrait while keeping the face exactly the same. Plain bright white backdrop, one large soft light from the front with a gentle shadow under the chin, sharp detail in the eyes and hair, crisp whites and rich blacks in the clothing. They wear a plain black crew-neck top and look slightly past the camera with a calm, serious expression. Fine grain, high-end magazine portrait, 4:5 frame, head and shoulders.
Black roll-neck Turn my uploaded photo into a black-and-white studio portrait while keeping the face exactly the same. Plain dark grey backdrop, a single hard light from the left that leaves half the face in shadow, sharp detail in the eyes and hair, deep blacks and clean highlights. They wear a fitted black roll-neck jumper and look slightly past the camera with a calm, serious expression. Fine grain, high-end magazine portrait, 4:5 frame, head and shoulders.
If the result isn't right
- If a hint of colour stays in the skin or backdrop, type "fully monochrome, zero colour saturation".
- When the shadow side goes pure black and the eye disappears, ask Gemini to "lift the shadow side slightly so the second eye is still visible".
- Gemini can over-sharpen beards and stubble until they look like wire; say "natural hair detail, no over-sharpening".
- If the face starts to look older or harder than you, reply "keep my age and features exactly as in the photo, only change the light".
