What each part of the prompt does
- Both faces counted
- "Keeping both faces exactly the same" names the number of faces. With two people, a singular "keep the face" can lead the model to protect one and loosen the other.
- Left and right
- Wardrobe is assigned by position, "the person on the left" and "the person on the right", so the prompt works for any couple without guessing who wears what. Check which side each of you is on before pasting.
- Period pose
- "Sit close together, turned slightly toward each other" is the standard studio pose of the time, and the overlapping shoulders read as a couple instead of two separate portraits.
- Print texture
- "Silver-gelatin texture, light grain and a faint vignette" describes how an actual 1950s print looks, so the image feels developed in a darkroom rather than filtered on a phone.
Variations to try
Same idea, one thing changed. These have no example image yet.
Outfits swapped Turn my uploaded photo of a couple into a 1950s black-and-white studio portrait, keeping both faces exactly the same. The person on the left wears a dark suit with a narrow tie, the person on the right a pearl necklace and a dress with a white collar. They sit close together, turned slightly toward each other, in front of a painted studio backdrop. Soft glamour lighting, silver-gelatin texture, light grain and a faint vignette. 4:5 frame.
Matching suits Turn my uploaded photo of a couple into a 1950s black-and-white studio portrait, keeping both faces exactly the same. Both people wear neat dark suits with crisp white shirts and narrow ties. They sit close together, turned slightly toward each other, in front of a painted studio backdrop. Soft glamour lighting, silver-gelatin texture, light grain and a faint vignette. 4:5 frame.
Hand-tinted colour Turn my uploaded photo of a couple into a 1950s hand-tinted studio portrait, keeping both faces exactly the same. The person on the left wears a pearl necklace and a dress with a white collar, the person on the right a dark suit with a narrow tie. They sit close together, turned slightly toward each other, in front of a painted studio backdrop. A black-and-white print with soft hand-painted colour on the cheeks, lips and clothes, light grain and a faint vignette. 4:5 frame.
If the result isn't right
- If the two faces blend together or start to look like siblings, reply "the two people must keep their own different faces from my photo".
- When the clothes land on the wrong person, swap the words left and right in the prompt instead of describing people by gender.
- If it looks like a modern photo with a grey filter, add "1950s studio photo, soft focus at the edges, slightly lifted blacks".
- Gemini may seat you on a sofa in a house; say "plain painted studio backdrop with a soft cloud pattern, no furniture".
