What each part of the prompt does
- Candid direction
- "Laughs while looking away from the camera" is what makes the shot read as candid. A posed, eye-contact portrait on film still looks like a posed portrait.
- Scene in one sentence
- A seaside cafe table, a cup of coffee and a sunny harbour give the model a foreground, a middle and a background in a single line, which adds depth without crowding the frame.
- Film character
- Grain, faded colour, soft highlights and "a touch of light leak at the edge" are the four marks people recognise from real film scans. Keeping the leak at the edge stops it washing over the face.
- Lens and shape
- "Shot on a 35mm lens" keeps some of the harbour in view instead of blurring it away, and 2:3 is the shape of a 35mm negative, so the crop itself feels like film.

If the result isn't right
- If the person keeps staring into the lens, add "eyes turned to the side, not looking at the camera" at the end of the prompt.
- When the grain looks like digital noise, ask for "fine, organic film grain like a scanned colour negative".
- Light leaks sometimes land across the face; reply "move the light leak to the right edge only and keep the face clear".
- If Gemini hands back a square image, follow up with "Redo it as a vertical 2:3 photo".
